Hello and welcome to the Year 1 class page. I’m Mrs McMonagle, the Year 1 teacher. We also have Mrs Gavin and Mrs Lucas supporting us every day as Teaching Assistants in class.

Key information

Our Curriculum

Please see our curriculum page for a detailed outline and of the all objectives the children will cover this half term.

We have a focused session on Reading, Writing, Maths and Phonics each day. We also enjoy lots of opportunities to learn about Science, Computing, PE, History, Geography, RE, Art, DT, Oracy and Music.

If you wish to speak to me about anything please feel free to catch me after school or alternatively book an appointment via the School Office.

To find out further information about what we’ve been learning please see our Class Blog.

Reading

Ideally, children in Year 1 should be reading at home for 5 to 10 minutes a day. This is so important for their development and can make a huge difference to their reading skills! Reading a book more than once helps build confidence, fluency and word recognition. We ask that you support your child in this and sign their reading record every time you hear them read. Please make sure book bags are brought into school every day. Books will be changed when required.

Phonics

We teach systematic synthetic phonics through Read Write Inc. (RWI) every day. The children have an hour daily session in which they learn phonetic sounds, reading, writing and grammar skills. Please head over to our Read Write Inc. page to read more about our fantastic work.

English

Our texts for this half term are Beegu and Man on the Moon. So far we have developed our inference skills by discussing what Beegu might be saying. We’ve also started to use adjectives to describe Beegu and the planet where she lives.

Maths

Maths is taught using White Rose Maths. White Rose Maths provide carefully planned and designed resources that address the three key aims of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The focus for this half term is Addition and Subtraction within 20.

Topic, Science and DT

Our topic for this half term is Explorers. The children will be learning about and researching different explorers in their History lessons. They will also design, create and evaluate a moon buggy in DT and investigate different materials in Science; all of which will link to our class texts Beegu or Man on the Moon.

P.E

P.E is on Thursdays and Fridays in Year 1. Children are expected to come to school in their PE kits on these days. Our focus in PE this half term is the development of fundamental movement skills such as travelling, throwing, jumping and landing.
