Learn Together, Shine Together.

CLASS 5/6C (Year 5/6): Miss Connearn

P.E is on Mondays and Fridays this half term. We are developing skills needed for invasion games with a focus on hockey. Towards the end of the half term we will move onto dance, following the rugby cup we will explore the Haka, a tribal dance performed by the New Zealand team. We will investigate the meaning of the dance, when and why it is preformed and it’s history. We will then develop our dance skills and choreograph our own tribal dances in groups. Each week your child needs a white t-shirt, blue shorts and black pumps in a labelled PE bag.

Maths, spelling and comprehension homework will be sent out each Friday in the homework books, this should be returned by Wednesday the following week. Please ensure your child practices their spellings using the cover, copy write and check method ready for the spelling test each Friday.

Home Reading

In addition to weekly homework, the children should read regularly, at least 3 times a week, every day if possible.

All of the children will have a home reading book that should go home each evening. Please sign their bookmark whenever you listen to them read. If you want to make a comment for myself or the class T.A, please do so or the bookmark or in their reading record.

Now we are in years 5 and 6 we must also focus on their understanding of the text. Please question your child on what they have read and pick out certain words that they may not understand. This will help develop their broader reading skills. Please encourage them to ask questions also.

This half term we are basing our learning on the adventure story Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. Through our reading children will develop their comprehension skills, retrieval and inference skills whilst expanding vocabulary. We will look at the features of an action story, focusing on identifying audience and purpose when writing, drafting and writing our own narratives, describing settings, characters and events. Each week we will have a lesson with a grammar focus as well as daily grammar starters. We will continue to use Alan Peat's Sentence Types to develop our writing.

In Maths we will be focusing on long multiplication. We will then use this method to solve worded problems. We will also be investigating perimeter, area and volume of shapes, including compound shapes before moving onto problems including capacity and units of measure. Towards the end of the half term we will focus on division. Each of these topics require times tables, please encourage your child to practise and learn their times tables to aid their ongoing development in maths.

In Science we are investigating electricity. We will make predictions and prove our theories through experiments. We will record these in our books using the correct Scientific symbols to represent the components of the circuits, collecting and recording results using different methods.

This half term our R.E focus is “What it is like to be a Muslim in Britain today.” We will explore the Islamic faith, beliefs and practise.

In the final week of the term we will explore “How Christians prepare for Christmas” as we look forward to the upcoming festivities.

This half term we are learning about World War 2.  Using a variety of sources we will take a journey through time from 1939-1945, investigating cause and effect, key events, influential characters and its relevance today.

We look forward to working with you and if you have any issues please don't hesitate to pop in and speak to us when you drop your child off or pick them up in an evening. Alternatively, you can ring school and I will call you back.
