CLASS 5/6J     Mrs Jenkins

Mrs Morgan     Mrs Lucas     Mrs Worden     Mrs Lynch

P.E is on Tuesday and Wednesdays. On these days children are required to come to school in full PE kits and will stay in these for the day. As we approach winter children can wear long tracksuit bottoms and a long top as PE will be outdoors as much as possible.

Currently, we are unable to send homework out in homework books. Each Friday children will be given a spellings list and a times table sheet to complete and learn. We ask that children do not return this homework but complete it in preparation for a class test every Friday. Other homework will now be set on Purple Mash. I will set a Maths activity and a reading comprehension. Once children have completed this work, they can hand it in online.

Home Reading

We love books in 5/6J! Although we cannot send reading books home presently, please encourage your child to read as much as possible. This could be on Purple Mash or a book at home. If you don’t have access to a book please let me know. Please continue to encourage your child to read at least three times a week as this is vital to their progression in lessons.

Your child will be reading daily in school, using both books from our reading scheme and our reading corner. We will be concentrating on our inference skills as well as sharing our love of books with each other.

This half term...

We have spent the first two weeks in school reading a wonderful book by Oliver Jeffers called, Here We are. Ask your child about it. It has inspired some fantastic writing already. In class we will be reading ‘Holes’ in guided reading. We will read each chapter together then children will answer questions independently. These questions will be focused on VIPERS (vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval and summaries.) Each week we will have a lesson with a grammar focus as well as daily grammar starters. We will continue to use Alan Peat's Sentence Types to develop our writing.

This half term we are basing our learning on the book ‘Holes’. Our topics and subjects will be based on this book to embed our learning in all areas of the curriculum. There will be a weekly focus on handwriting and grammar; looking at different spelling rules focused on the KS2 spelling lists.

In Maths we will be following the Inspire Maths scheme of work. This scheme is a programme that supports us in teaching for mastery and meeting the higher expectations of the National Curriculum.  With this we use the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract). We are starting the year with place value of 6-digit numbers. We will learn practically and apply our learning when problem solving.

Problem solving and times tables will be a focus in Maths throughout the year. Please encourage your child to continue practising their times tables to aid their ongoing development in maths. Each Friday there will be a test based on a different times table each week.

In Science we are studying Evolution and Inheritance

This half term our R.E focus is “Life as a journey.”  We will explore how the children can apply this concept to their own lives and look at the lives of biblical figures. We will plot the journey Jesus took as described in the bible and discuss how different faiths and religious figures have prepared for pilgrimages.

Our history focus is the Mayans. We will look at timelines with dates, hold class debates and produce non-fiction cross curricular writing. We will look at food, technology and tools, religion and rituals, homes and everyday life and linked with our art focus, culture and art.

I am so pleased to have the children back in school and am looking forward to the new half term. If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact me at school through the office and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am looking forward to the year ahead in our Year 5/6 bubble and a, grateful for your continued support.
