# CLASS 6A HOME LEARNING 18.05.2020

Hello everyone and welcome to another week of distance learning. I hope you all had a relaxing weekend and are ready to get back to work.

Maths: Find the sheet entitled Mental strategies ( + and -) on page 34. This page shows you how to use some mental strategies to add several numbers together. Look at the examples at the top of the sheet – here are three strategies you could use

1) Look for pairs that make multiples of 10 or 100 e.g. 35 + 40 + 65 = 65+35 =100 + 40 = 140

3) Recognise an equivalent fraction 14 + 15+ 16 + 15 = Take 1 of the 16 and add it to the 14 to give the equivalent of 15 X 4 = 60

· Look at the diagram in Section A. You have to navigate from the start to the finish adding the numbers in each circle as you go. There are ten route for you to calculate e.g.

12 + 18 + 12 + 12 = Step 1 : 18 + 12 = 30 Step 2: 12 + 12 = 24 so Step 3 : 30 + 24 = 54

· Now have a look at Section B. Use whatever strategy you think is best to calculate the number sentences mentally.

· Now have a go at Section C, where you are asked to find the missing number in a number sentence.

Look at number 1) 76 + 18 + ? + 34 = 144 so I would do: 76 + 34 = 110 +18 = 118 so ? = 26

Comprehension – Find the information sheet, all about ‘Fidget Spinners’. You may well remember the craze that swept the nation a few years ago. This extract gives you some background information into these popular little gadgets.

· Read the double sided information sheet and answer the questions on the pages provided.

· Can you write a balanced argument about whether fidget spinners should be banned from schools or not? Remember you have to consider the positive and the negative aspects of the argument and then make a decision one way or another.

Extra Task – Find the sheet entitled ‘Sharing Knowledge’. This is a basically a general knowledge sheet that you can have a go at filling in. There are twenty boxes, each with a question inside.
