# CLASS 6A HOME LEARNING 10.06.2020

Morning everybody. I hope you are getting through the tasks that I am setting for you but don’t worry if you are not managing to finish everything I set - just do what you can each day - you can always pick up where you left off the next day.

Here are your tasks for today if you did manage to finish it all off.

Maths – Find the maths worksheet that has a picture of a ship on the left hand side (Page 49). This worksheet is all about problem solving and rounding up or down after you have divided e.g.

How many £12 tickets can I buy with £187?

187÷ 12 = 15 remainder 7 so the answer is 15 tickets (we round down to the nearest full ticket).

Or

An egg box holds 12 eggs. How many boxes are needed for 187 eggs.

187 ÷ 12 = 15 remainder 7 so 16 boxes are needed (15 would be full and the 16th box would have 7 eggs in).

Comprehension - Log onto purple mash and find the 2 dos about our new chosen text: ‘Pit Boys.’

Read the fifth chapter of the book and answer the online multiple choice questions.

1. Look at the paragraph beginning: “Miriam!” William said… to the paragraph ending: …for a cask.

Why did Miriam agree to help the boys with their plan?

Explain why William was prepared to risk his own life to put the plan in place.

1. “So, the inspector will realise there are children under ten working down the mine when he sees us, and he’ll report it,” Joseph said. “Is that the plan?” “That’s all you need to know for now,” William answered.

Why do you think William didn’t tell Joseph the full plan until after Miriam had sent the signal?

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

Monday was the day of the official/offitial inspection. Asking Miriam to give the boys a signal was an essencial/essential part of William’s plan. William and Miriam made a special/spetial arrangement.

• Which two sentences use punctuation to indicate parenthesis? Tick two.

The idea of hiding down the mine in total darkness, when the other children had gone home, sounded scary.

They heard the unmistakeable sound of the chain, with its iron bar, clanking down the mineshaft.

Joseph scrambled along after William, clinging onto the chain.

William struggled free, making the iron bar lurch dangerously to the side.

• Underline the relative clause in the sentence below.

He was on the verge of pushing his way through the trapdoor when he heard three knocks.

• What is the grammatical term for the underlined words in the sentence below?

Joseph had got used to the comforting flicker of a candle. ___________________________________________________________________________________

Writing: We have seen how Joseph and William react in various situations. Write a comparison of these two characters – how are they similar and how are they different. Remember:

• Use evidence from the text to back up your character descriptions e.g. William was a risk taker / he threw himself down the mineshaft

• What are Joseph’s strengths/ What does he find challenging? What do people like or dislike about his personality? Is there anything negative about him?

• What are William’s strengths? What does he find challenging? What do people like or dislike about his personality? Is there anything negative about him?

• In which ways are the two boys similar?

• Try to use some similes in your writing e.g. Joseph is like a human punch bag after a shift at the mine.
