CLASS 6A HOME LEARNING 17.06.2020

Hello one and all. I can honestly say I’ve had much more memorable birthdays than the one yesterday – I usually get to share them with my class and we’ve missed out this year. The sweets are on me if we ever get back into school – that’s assuming we’re allowed to have sweets due to social distancing etc. We’ll have to wait and see. But in the meantime we need to crack on with our Lockdown learning.

Here are today’s tasks for you to complete.

Maths- Find the same booklet as yesterday (HLP w2)

  • Using your knowledge of times tables and multiples, have a go at the problems on page 8. You need to read the questions carefully and attempt what is being asked. Try to complete the questions without asking for help initially if you can. Once you have read the question a few times, if you then require some help, then by all means ask someone.

Comprehension - Log onto purple mash and find the 2 dos about our new chosen text: ‘Just the beginning.’

  • Read the third chapter of the book and answer the online multiple choice questions.

  • Now answer these questions:

  1. Find and copy two words or phrases that suggest Ennio’s house was beyond repair.

  1. Look at the paragraph beginning: ‘Suddenly, bouncing towards…’ Why didn’t Ennio play with Luca?

  1. Look at the paragraph beginning: ‘Just then, someone…’ Why might Fred have been lumbering?

  1. Look at the paragraph beginning: “Let me take…” Why was Dad’s face as red as fire?

  1. Mum looked poised to object, but it made sense. Why might Mum have objected to Ennio going to collect the generator?

Sequencing

Put these events in the order in which they happened in the story, numbering them from 1 to 5.

A man approached Ennio and his mother asking whether they could help the lady next door.

Ennio heard a loud clanking sound coming from inside his home.

Luca came bounding out of the ruined house.

Luca yapped relentlessly at the wall of the house.

Ennio saw his dad with a pickaxe desperately trying to dig down to rescue his mother.

Spelling Punctuation and Grammar

  1. Choose the correct spellings to complete the sentences below.

You didn’t need to be an observant/observent person to notice the damage to our house. Mum was hesitant/hesitent to tell me about Gran; she didn’t feel confidant/confident about her chance of survival.

  1. Complete the following sentences using which or that.

The entrance to the cellar was beneath the part _______ had collapsed. The pickaxe, ________ was far too heavy, couldn’t be used by Ennio. Luca was barking near the wall _______ had a brick-sized hole just above ground level.

  1. Underline the modal verb in the sentence below.

“Come on, Ennio,” Mum snapped, knowing our neighbour could die if we didn’t help her quickly.

  1. Rewrite the sentence below so that it is in Standard English.

Luca heared a noise and were barking to let everyone know what it were.

  1. Explain why a hyphen has been used in the sentence below.

There was a small, brick-sized hole just above ground level, covered with an iron grating.

Writing- Ennio’s village was in a state of chaos and destruction. Use figurative language-similes, metaphors, hyperbole, great vocabulary, onomatopoeia and personification-to write a poem called ‘After the Earthquake.’

Reading - As always, find yourself a quiet corner where you won’t be disturbed, and read a book of your choice for at least 20 minutes.
