Morpurgo Class

Welcome to our Year 4 Morpurgo Class!

In our Class we have:

Miss Imtiaz - Class Teacher

Miss Shepherd - Support Staff

Mrs Morgan - HLTA

Our class is named after Sir Michael Morpurgo OBE  who is one of Britain’s best loved children’s authors. He has written over 150 books, he has won many prizes, including the Smarties Prize, the Writers Guild Award, the Whitbread Award, the Blue Peter Book Award and the Eleanor Farjeon Lifetime Achievement Award.Michael was knighted in 2018 for services to literature and charity.

English

This half term our class novel is 'How to Train your Dragon, by Cressida Cowell.' Children will complete high quality reading tasks including guided reading and all of their  writing in English lessons will be based on this book.  We will be reading and writing: instructions, Diary recounts and Narrative (Adventure Story)

Children will also complete spellings using our new spelling scheme which is accessible online. We will send home children's login details so that all the activities can be completed at home too. This will replace the spelling homework that we used to set.

Home Reading

Children should read regularly every day. This is the most important homework the children have. Listen to your child read and then ask them questions about what they have just read and understood. It is also important that children experience a wide variety of reading books at home, as well as school. Books need to be returned to school every day as we will endeavour to hear your child read at least once a week  and change the books when we do this. Please make sure you sign your child's reading record every time you listen to them read.

Maths

In Maths we follow the 'White Rose' scheme and our focus for this half term is 'Place Value' and 'Addition and subtraction'. Again, will will send home children's login details for the online 'My Maths ' homework which needs to be completed weekly. We will also be sending home times tables for the children to practice as all the children in year will sit the multiplication tables check (MTC)  which is statutory for all year 4 pupils. Please practice as much times tables as you can with your child at home.

Topic, Art and DT

In topic this half term we will be studying History and our focus is The Vikings, which ties in with our class read, 'How to Train your Dragon'. Our Science lessons are all about Animals including humans and during Art we will plan and create Viking pottery using clay . Our computing lessons will focus on coding, we will be using a variety of progams to design and create an interactive scene.

PE

PE will take place on Wednesday (KICK)  and Swimming (Thursdays). The children are expected  bring their swimming kit on Thursday and come to  school in their PE kit on Wednesday only. This includes:

  • Black/navy/dark grey jogging bottoms or tracksuit bottoms
  • White T-shirt
  • School cardigan/ Jumper
  • black trainers

Please can I ask that all parents ensure PE kit, Swimming kit and uniform all have names written in them so that they don’t get lost.

Homework

Homework will be sent out every Friday and children will have until the following Friday to complete this. Homework will include online 'Spelling Frame' activities, online 'My Maths' work and reading activities. We expect children to be reading with parent/guardians several times a week to practise their skills.

We encourage the children to eat a healthy snack during break and  bring a water bottle into school in case they are thirsty through-out the day. It is really important that they are kept hydrated so it is so much easier if they have their own water bottle in school.

As your child’s teachers, we are here if you ever need us so please don’t hesitate to contact the school on 01254 702119. Lines are open 8am-4.00pm.
