British Values

Promoting British Values at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School

The Department for Education state that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values were reiterated by the Prime Minister in 2014. At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways.

Democracy

Democracy is embedded in the school.  Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council and regular questionnaires.  The elections of the head-boy and head-girl, School Council, House Captains, Peer Mediators and Worship team are based on pupil and staff votes (following presentations or applications), reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.

The Rule of Law

The Rule of Law is embedded throughout school life and reinforced consistently to help pupils understand that rules exist to keep everyone safe, ensure fairness and support a positive learning environment. Clear expectations are shared and discussed so pupils understand why rules matter, with class rules often created collaboratively to encourage ownership and responsibility. Consistent behaviour policies, restorative approaches and positive reinforcement help pupils reflect on their actions and resolve conflicts fairly. Through the curriculum, assemblies, PSHE and visits from community figures, pupils also learn how laws protect individuals and society, supporting them to develop respect for rules and grow into responsible, confident citizens.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of our core values and is central to our school rules and ethos. Pupils understand that respect is expected in all aspects of school life and must be shown to everyone, regardless of differences and to everything in the environment around them. At Holy Trinity CE Primary School, the value of respect underpins our daily work both in and out of the classroom, shaping positive relationships, promoting kindness, and supporting a caring and inclusive community.

Tolerance

Our core value of respect promotes tolerance and understanding of those from different backgrounds, faiths and viewpoints. At Holy Trinity CE Primary School, pupils develop this understanding through Religious Education following the RE Today Services scheme, PSHE learning, visits to places of worship and welcoming visitors from a variety of faiths. Respect for the diverse beliefs and themed learning weeks further enrich pupils’ experiences. Through these opportunities, pupils develop a deeper understanding of their role within a culturally diverse society and learn to value and celebrate difference.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are encouraged to make choices within a safe and supportive environment. Clear boundaries, a nurturing ethos and a curriculum rooted in Christian values help pupils understand how to make responsible decisions. Pupils are taught about their rights and personal freedoms through PSHE and e-safety lessons and are supported to exercise these safely. Opportunities to make choices are built into daily school life, including selecting challenges, choosing how to record learning and participating in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, helping pupils to develop independence and confidence.
