PSHE: Personal, Social and Health Education Statement

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education at Holy Trinity is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. 

Intent

At Holy Trinity we will:

•  provide a curriculum that is broadly based and balanced and which meets the needs of all pupils
•  make good provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) for our children, drawing on good practice.
• promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and society, and prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life 

Key Stage 1

PHSE is all about helping the children learn about themselves as an individual and as a member of the community. They will learn some basic rules and skills for making sure they keep themselves healthy, safe and how to behave well. Opportunities are created to allow them the option to show they can take responsibility for themselves and their surrounding environment. They progress to learn about their own and other people's feelings, and will gradually become aware of the views, needs and rights of other children. Throughout PHSE they will learn and improve on their own social skills such as sharing, helping others, playing, resolving things.

Key Stage 2

PHSE is all about teaching the pupils to learn about themselves further as a growing individual, as well as changing individuals using their own experiences and ideas. They gradually become more confident, mature and independent. Their knowledge of the world will broaden as they begin to explore into communities and its interdependence. They will develop their sense of social justice and moral responsibility. They will learn to understand that their own choices/decisions and behaviour can affect local, national or global issue. They will start to interact more fully in school and community activities. As they are beginning to develop into young adults, they become aware of the changes they face such as changing schools, throughout this they will be shown they have the support of their school and their community. They learn to make more confident and informed decisions about their health and environment, about responsibility, individually and as a group, for their own learning and to resist bullying.

During the autumn term, the whole school focuses on the issues related to bullying in our special anti-bullying week, in line with the national anti-bullying week.

Sex and Relationship Education Statement

At Holy Trinity, sex and relationship education are part of the curriculum, under the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) curriculum and also the Science curriculum. Whilst topic coverage looks at the scientific process of reproduction, we also tackle issues about morality and individual responsibility. The way the curriculum is delivered largely depends on the age of the child.

In the early years the focus is on developing positive relationships with others e.g. falling out and getting along, how to respect and treat others etc. It is only in the older years that matters around reproduction are discussed. Older children are taught in a way that allows them to ask and explore moral questions.

At all times as a Church School, we promote sex education within the Christian ethos, advocating loving relationships and marriage.

Parents/Guardians of children in Year 6 are given the opportunity to meet staff who will explain what issues are taught, how they are taught and view materials that will be used to teach this area. Parents/Guardians have the right to withdraw their child from the sex education part of the school curriculum.
